How It Works
Distance-per-fuel units (km/L, MPG) and fuel-per-distance units (L/100km) are reciprocals, so higher MPG means lower L/100km. Electric units use the EPA equivalence of 33.7 kWh per US gallon of gasoline, the same basis as the MPGe figure on EV window stickers.

How do I convert between two specific units?

How do MPG and L/100km relate?
They're reciprocal: L/100km = 235.215 Γ· MPG (US). So 30 MPG (US) = 7.84 L/100km, and 5 L/100km = 47 MPG (US). UK MPG uses the larger imperial gallon, so UK figures are ~20% higher.
What is MPGe and how are electric units converted?
MPGe is the EPA's efficiency rating for EVs: miles per 33.7 kWh, the energy in one US gallon of gasoline. This tool uses the same 33.7 kWh/gal equivalence to link mi/kWh, km/kWh, and kWh/100km with the fuel units.
Are the conversion factors exact?
The fuel-unit factors are exact (derived from 1 mi = 1.609344 km and the exact US/imperial gallons). Electricβfuel conversions rest on the EPA's 33.7 kWh-per-gallon convention β exact as a convention, but only meaningful as a gasoline-energy equivalence.
